Walt Osterman

Walt A. Osterman, 79, of Belt, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in Great Falls surrounded by his family.A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Schnider Funeral Home. A vigil will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at St. Marks Catholic Church in Belt. A funeral liturgy will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 2015 at St. Marks followed by a luncheon. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Great Falls. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.Walt was born on December 22, 1935 in Belt, Montana. He grew up on a dairy farm between Monarch and Neihart and attended school in Belt, Monarch and Neihart. For over 50 years, Walt was one of the best heavy equipment and automobile mechanics around, working for Triangle Tire Co., General Mills, McIntyre Construction, Floyd Pappin and Sons, United Materials, and retiring from Cascade County Road Department in 1998.He was an active member of St. Marks Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He served in the Montana Air National Guard for six years.Walts enjoyment was fishing in Alaska, playing basketball, snowmobiling, riding on the ATV, playing with his grandchildren and Western music. Walking the hills hunting and being with the Nebel hunting camp crew was a yearly event. With the help of several friends, especially Bruce Neill, Walt fulfilled his lifelong dream of building a house and garage in Armington.Walt is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene; children Dennis (Amber) of Butte, Debra Urick of Great Falls, and Darin (Noel) of Belt; eight grandchildren, Ashley (Justin) Clark, Cole, Lane, and Madison Urick, Ryann and Parker Osterman, and Natalie and Andrew Osterman; great-grandchildren Connor, Cooper and Eden; brothers Tom (JoAnn) Osterman of Chester and David (Louise) Osterman of Monarch; sisters Mary (Jack) Boettcher of Great Falls and Bernice (Cary) Breeden of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mary Osterman; sisters Margaret Griffin and Helen Thorson; and brothers Lewis and Herman Bud Osterman.The family suggest any memorial donations be directed to the St. Marks Knights of Columbus Scholarship fund, 128 Castner St, Belt, MT 59412.
