Rae Lorene Hauk, 81, of Stanford, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 with her loyal husband Don, by her side.Rae was born on September 20, 1934 in Terry, Montana to Glenn and Elizabeth (Roos) Buckingham. She attended grade school in Terry, where she met Don, her future husband. They grew up together, were confirmed together, attended junior high as well as high school and college together. Don first began to notice her as more than a friend during a pick-up basketball game in junior high. She went to college in Missoula with Don and received her bachelors degree in liberal arts. She married Don on November 30, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Terry, Montana.During high school, Rae was the accompanist for the high school choir, played saxophone in the dance band, was chosen as a delegate for the National Home-Ec Convention in Kansas City, and was a varsity cheerleader all four years of high school. Rae was secretary for Famers Union Oil Co. when she was in high school and spent her summers as a telephone operator, where she eventually became a supervisor.From 1958 to 1969, Rae and Don farmed and ranched forty miles north of Terry where she enjoyed working with the animals, raising her garden, selling produce to the local store, and playing the organ for Sacred Heart Catholic Church. In 1969, the family moved to Stanford where she sold Avon and later was secretary for the Judith Basin Planning Board. After that, she become the Deputy Clerk of District Court in Stanford until the summer of 2010.In Stanford, Rae gave piano lessons to the kids in the community, was an active member in the St. Rose of Lima Altar Society, and played the organ for Monsignor Glucek on First Friday Masses in Stanford. She was known for her vegetable gardening and beautiful flower gardens at her house in Stanford. Rae was an avid quilter and enjoyed refinishing antique oak furniture. First and foremost, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She would drive countless miles to attend her grandchildrens birthdays and events. She was referred to simply as Pal by her oldest granddaughter. She loved to see her family, and when it was time for them to leave she would simply say take your time going, but hurry right back. There are not words that can express the love felt for her by her family. She was the heart and soul of the family, and her presence will be missed dearly.The family would like to extend their greatest gratitude for all the thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement during Raes illness. Words cannot express the love shown to Rae by the community.Rae is survived by her husband, Don; sons Jeremy (Monica) Hauk of Billings and Matthew (Carla) Hauk of Great Falls; daughters Lisa (Jim) Shields of Glendive and Rochelle (Chris) Whittaker of Surprise, AZ; brother Jack (Loretta) Buckingham of Colorado Springs, CO; and nine grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Elizabeth; brother Kay Buckingham; and special sister, Aunt Lu McGraw.Vigil service will be held on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Stanford. The funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima as well. Burial will follow at Stanford Cemetery with a luncheon at the church afterward.
