Mary Margaret Spragg Hasenkrug

December 7, 1929 — July 24, 2021

Mary Margaret Spragg Hasenkrug was born December 7, 1929, in Lewistown, Montana. She was the most faithful person most of us have been blessed to meet, a true Saint on Earth, and her kindness and quiet generosity were unmatched. She had a gift for making each person who crossed her path feel cherished and worthwhile throughout her 91 years. Mary was the second of Walter and Zoey Spragg’s ten children, born mere weeks after the stock market crash of 1929 that started the Great Depression, and she shared her twelfth birthday with the attack on Pearl Harbor. She graduated from Saint Leo’s High School in Lewistown before moving to Great Falls to attend the College of Great Falls. On Valentine’s Day 1949, she met Harold Hasenkrug at a roller-skating party; they fell in love and were married on September 3, 1949, at Holy Sacrament Catholic Church in Black Eagle. A woman ahead of her time, Mary raised five children and was a whiz with numbers, working her way up at Great Falls National Bank where she worked for many years, eventually becoming a bank officer before her retirement. She was deeply devoted to Catholic and Pro-life causes, volunteering as treasurer for decades at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church where she was an active parishioner, and she spent many years volunteering as a member of the PTA, the Altar Society, a Lay Eucharistic Minister, and librarian at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School. She was a devout woman who rarely missed daily Mass, greatly enjoyed her daily coffee and breakfast dates with friends after Mass, and who faithfully wore out her rosaries offering up so many prayers for family and friends. Mary was a woman of many talents, and was particularly famous for her bread, cinnamon rolls, and raspberry jam. In her later years she developed a love for painting and filled her home with original works of art. She loved her family deeply, rarely missing a major life event for her children and ten grandchildren, despite being scattered across the country, and organized many family reunions for hundreds of extended family members near and far, fostering relationships that will continue well into the future. Her home, which she and Harold built themselves, was a frequent gathering place for family celebrations and events and was always filled with love and laughter. Mary is survived by her children, Dr. Kim (MarieAnne) Hasenkrug, Kathy Forsman, Rick (Deb) Hasenkrug, and Linda (Bob) Dykeman; son-in-law, Dave Bowen; grandchildren, Heather and Jayme Bowen, Dr. Aaron Hasenkrug, Dr. Michaela Richins, Dr. Jennifer Stoyell, Dr. Amy Merrill, Chad and Tyler Hasenkrug, Brian Dykeman, and Stephanie Brosseau; siblings, Ron (Phyllis) Spragg, Don (Arlene) Spragg, Ed (Marge) Spragg, Doris Wright, and Theresa Dimico; and many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Zoey Spragg; husband of 62 years, Harold Hasenkrug; daughter, Debbie; son-in-law, Ed; and brothers and sisters, Wilhelmenia, Violet, Bernadette, and Dan. Due to the presence of COVID-19 and Mary’s desire to protect her friends and family, funeral arrangements will be private family events, but will be streamed live for those wishing to attend virtually. Visitation will be open to the public Wednesday, August 11, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Schnider Funeral Home. On the evening of Friday, August 13, 2021, the 10th Street Bridge will be lit in Mary’s honor, and family and friends are welcome to gather at 9:15 p.m. at the bridge for a brief celebration of life. Masks and social distancing will be encouraged.
