Mary Emma Guhl

May 10, 1948 — February 2, 2024

Mary Emma Guhl passed away on February 2, 2024, surrounded by family members who loved her dearly.

Mary was born on May 10, 1948, in Choteau, MT, to Albert and Anna Hansmann. She grew up the youngest of 7 children near Pendroy, MT. After graduating from Choteau High School, Mary graduated from Northern MT College in Havre. Working as a nurse in Havre, she met the love of her life, Charles Mitchell Guhl. They married on October 9, 1971. After Mitch finished his deployment with the US Air Force, they settled down in California. It was there that their two sons, Matthew and Martin, were born. Wanting a better life for their family, Mitch and Mary and the boys moved to Great Falls in 1985. She continued nursing at the Columbus Hospital, Benefis System, and various nursing homes over the years. Even after she retired, Mary continued to care for her friends and family. She was a nurse and advocate for her husband, Mitch, and her oldest brother, Ambrose, during the last few years. Mary leaves a huge hole in the lives of many.

She is survived by her sons, Matthew and Martin Guhl of Missoula; her two beloved grandchildren, Caleb and Quinn; as well as her Cocker Spaniel, Cody. She will also be missed by her brothers, Richard (Emily) Hansmann of Pendroy and Roy (Debby) Hansmann of Helena; her sisters, Edelane (Tony) Verstraete and Mabel (Ivan) DeVries of Conrad; as well as sisters-in-law, Gail Tilson of Oklahoma and Janie (Jim) Hinds of New York. Mary also has numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who will miss her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mitch; parents, Anna and Albert Hansmann; brother, Ambrose Hansmann; sister, Ruby Bouma; as well as several brothers- and sisters-in- law.

A private family gathering will be held this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Bowling League (1101 Ave B NW, Great Falls MT 59404).
