Larry Johnson

Larry Johnson passed away on May 2, 2022, from complications with advanced Parkinson’s. Larry was born in Great Falls on April 26, 1952, to Dolly and Harlan Johnson. Larry's life passion was the outdoors and geology. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1970, he pursued a degree in geology from the University of Montana. Missoula became his "basecamp" throughout his life. After a few early years of working in the field he returned to Missoula for a master’s degree in Geology. His profession took him on many adventures and built him an incredible network of friends. From Alaska and Nevada to New Zealand to name a few, he worked on exploration projects and development of primarily gold deposits. His favorite digs though were always right here in Montana. Later in his career he was employed in reclamation projects, always one who wanted to see it done right. When not working in the outdoors, he played in the outdoors. Hiking and backcountry camping, cross-country skiing, and even winter camping. His President's weekend winter camping tradition with a hardy group of friends lasted from early college years until 2020. Cross-country skiing adventures had him trek through New Zealand, Norway, Glacier Park, Canada, and anywhere that offered a Montana challenge or vista. He is survived by his brother, Alan (Donna) Johnson in Great Falls; and a huge family of friends and their offspring that truly were his family. To remember Larry, go for a hike and look at some rocks, and maybe "bag a peak." If done while back country skiing in his playground, turn some "tellies" on your descent. If vigorous outdoor adventures are not your calling, grab a Roadside Geology book and tour our land. Larry will probably be touring with you. In memory, consider planting a tree. He might like that. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Blackfoot Ranch west of Lincoln on Highway 200 at the Lewis & Clark and Powell County Line.
