Julia Iris Smith

December 24, 1927 — October 4, 2019

Heaven’s gates were opened for Julia “Julie” Smith on October 4, 2019. She was almost 92. She was born on December 24, 1927, to Sidney and Clara Johnson. She had one brother, Kenneth. She was the last to pass in her family. She married David “Dave” Smith in June of 1949. They were just shy of their 70th wedding anniversary when Dave passed in March of this year. They have three children, Gary, Layne, and Sydne; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. All three generations of children are healthy, and doing well. Julie grew up near Highwood on a farm/ranch until going off to college in Bozeman, where she met Dave. In Bozeman, she enjoyed sorority life as an Alpha Omicron Pi member and majored in home economics. Her career started as a teacher in Wolf Point where her oldest son was born. They moved back to Great Falls, and never left. She became a stay at home mom until her children were raised, then she went back to teaching as a substitute teacher. She was determined to provide a secure and loving environment for her family. Throughout her life, Julie enjoyed playing bridge and visiting with her many friends, sewing clothes for herself and her family, and decorating the interior of her home. She had a real knack with wallpaper. She really enjoyed watching and helping her own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren pursue their various interests. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. She was involved with helping others through Junior League, P.E.O., Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, and as a Deacon at Sunrise Presbyterian Church. Julie will be missed as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and a friend to many. She will be forever in our hearts. A family memorial service will be held at a future date. If you would like to make a donation in Julie’s memory, her family would be pleased with a donation to the Great Falls Peace Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity of your choice.
