Our mother, Julia (Medvec) Desy, passed away in Great Falls, Montana, on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at the age of 92.There will be a viewing on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Schnider Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Julia will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Henry on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Lewistown, Montana. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.Julia was born into an immigrant family of Slovak miners in Tracy, Montana on February 17, 1921, the first of her family to be born in the United States. She lived most of her adult life in Great Falls, with stints in Helena, Livingston, Kansas, and Minot, ND.She married the love of her life, Henry Desy, on September 2, 1950, and gave birth to six children. After Henry passed away suddenly while the family was living in Minot, her close-knit family of Medvec siblings traveled to Minot to move Julia and her six young children home to Great Falls for good. She met the significant challenge of raising the six kids as a single mom. It was a demanding, difficult task in which she demonstrated great commitment and strength. She supported her family by working in the Social Security Administration for 25 years.Julia was the last surviving member of her generation of Medvecs. Julia was preceded in death by her parents, Steve and Katarina Medvec; siblings Steve Medvec, Andy Medvec, Bill Medvec and Eleanor Flood; and her husband, Henry Desy.Julia is survived by all six of her children, Kathy Desy, Betsy Desy (Charles Kost), Marcia Desy (Rick Schwertfeger), Peggy Mitchell (Dennis), Tom Desy (Piper), and Teri Desy; niece, Gretchen Van Natter; nephew, Joe Flood Jr.; 18 other nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren, Thomas Kost, Katie Mitchell, Jenna Peters, Amanda Desy, Zack Desy, Brady Schwertfeger, Patrick Mitchell, Tim Peters, Mitchell Desy, and Casey Schwertfeger; and one great-grandchild, Weston Miller.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Easter Seals Adult Day Program, 2326 1st Ave N, Great Falls, MT 59401 or Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 409 13th St. S., Great Falls, MT 59405.The family would like to thank Goldstone Assisted Living for their years of care for Julia.
