Howard J. Gusaas

Howard J. Gusaas passed away on October 7, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. While battling this disease, he chose to be happy and positive. A memorial service will be held on October 19, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Howard was born to Johnnie and Alma Gusaas on June 8, 1934, in Valley City, ND. He grew up on a farm near Hastings, ND. He graduated from Litchville High School in 1952. He served in the Army and in the North Dakota National Guard. He received the outstanding soldier award in 1957. Howard attended Valley City State College and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Math in 1960. While there, he served as President of the Student Association. Howard began his teaching career in 1960 in Great Falls, MT. He earned a Master of Science degree in mathematics at Central Michigan University during the summers of 1962-1965. In 1969-1970, he studied Computer Science at MSU, Bozeman and was instrumental in developing the Computer Science Program at the Great Falls Public School System. In 1973-1974, he taught computer science extension classes for teachers out of MSU Eastern. He taught math and computer science in Great Falls from 1960-1985. Howard was a member of PDK and served on the church board at Faith Lutheran Church. He also served on several committees in the Great Falls Education Association. After retiring from teaching, he worked as a financial planner for Waddell & Reed for 13 years. On November 26, 1976, Howard married Frances Enerson. He loved working on farms and ranches during weekends and summers. He and Frances were fortunate to purchase a farm near Ambrose, ND in 1985 where they got to spend time doing what they loved. Howard was an avid reader and always had a book nearby. He also liked doing crossword puzzles. Howard loved kids and loved giving them advice. He touched the lives of many in this way. He also loved going to the Peak Fitness Center to work out and socialize. He loved talking and telling jokes and stories to anyone who would listen. He had a great work ethic and took pride in his work. He believed in honesty and was always there to lend a helping hand. He was a wonderful and loving husband, brother, and uncle who will be greatly missed. Howard is survived by his wife, Frances; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Marlyn Enerson; and sister-in-law, Ethel Gusaas. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Milford, Don, and Kenny; sisters, Enid Harstad, Jean Olson, and Carol Durheim; brothers-in-law, Kermit Harsted, George Olson, and Doug Derheim; sisters- in-law, Elaine Gusaas and Karen Gusaas.
