Henry "Phil" Thoeny

Henry Philip Phil Thoeny was born on February 17, 1922 to Henry and Goldie Thoeny in Grenora, North Dakota. He was the third of eleven children.Phil passed to his heavenly home on July 14, 2017 in Parker, Colorado surrounded by family.Phil grew up in the harsh, yet fulfilling, farm life of North Dakota. He saw the Great Depression and the dust bowl era of the Dirty Thirties. In February of 1943, Phil got his call to duty and served 4 years in the Army during WW II. Phil was assigned to the 13th Armored Division and served in two separate battles in Europe. After discharge in 1947, Phil used the GI Bill to acquire a degree in journalism at the University of North Dakota. This landed him a job with the Farmers Press in Williston, North Dakota and a rented room at the home of the Fitzpatricks. Phil fell in love with their middle daughter, Bobbe Ann, and they were married on July 9, 1953.They moved to Great Falls, Montana in October of 1956 where Phil took a job with the Great Falls Tribune. During his ten-year stint at the Tribune, Phil spent two years as the sports editor. As the result of a story Phil was covering, he met Ian Davidson, who subsequently offered Phil a job as a broker-trainee in the brokerage firm, D.A. Davidson. Although he still had printers ink in his blood, Phil became the 17th employee at D.A.D. and continued as a stockbroker until his retirement at age 65. He continued to work in the investment field until fully retiring in 1999.Faith, family and friends filled his life. As they raised their six children, Phil became heavily involved with the grade school and parish his children attended, Sts. Peter & Paul. In 1980, Phil was baptized into the Catholic Church.Phil took many leadership roles throughout his life: in the church, community, and through his work. He said he didnt strive for these positions; rather, he didnt say no when asked.He played softball for many years, moving up to eventually help start and play in the Plus 40 league, started skiing in his late 50's, and golfed the last time when he was 90. Phil had many, lasting friendships throughout his life.One of his greatest joys was to make the Veterans Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. in 2013 with his son, Scott.Phil and Bobbe Ann moved to the Denver, Colorado area in the summer of 2015, which put them in close proximity to six of their seven grandchildren.Phil was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Laura, Louise, Chauncey, Eva, Hazel, and Mike.Phil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bobbe Ann; siblings Adrian, Art, Kay, and Marke; children Kim (Dave) of Great Falls, MT, Jim of Kemmerer, WY, Scott of Los Angeles, CA, Ann of Seattle, WA, Maria (Steve) and Richard of Denver, CO; grandchildren Lindsay (James) of Knoxville, TN, Breanna, Mikayla, Desirae, Katie, Zack, and Jake, all of Denver, CO plus their 2 step-grandchildren, Kim and Kristi and their families.A funeral liturgy will be held on Friday, July 28, 2017 at 12 noon at St. Ann's Cathedral, 715 3rd Ave. No. Burial of ashes will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Schnider Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.Memorials in Phil's name may be made to St. Ann's soup kitchen or a charity of the donor's choice.
