Harvey Floyd Cardwell

Harvey Floyd Cardwell, was born on August 30, 1935, in Cody, Nebraska. He was raised by his mother and father, Violet Leonore Hamilton-Cardwell and Jacob Floyd Cardwell, in Valentine, Nebraska. His father worked as a horse racing jockey, and a laborer. His mother worked as a house wife and mother, and dishwasher at a local cafe. Harvey attended the school in Valentine, Nebraska, but started working at a young age as a ranch hand. Harvey had four siblings, Joann Downing (deceased). Rose (died in infancy), Carol Wolfe (Newcastle, Wyoming), Frank Cardwell (Kingman, Arizona), and Elmer Cardwell (Billings, Montana). Harvey's sister, Carol, introduced him to his future wife Grace Adell Hartgrave in 1954, when she was living with her grandmother in Nebraska. In January of 1955, Harvey and Adell traveled to South Dakota. Adell's mother, who was then living in Newcastle, Wyoming, met them in Rapid City, South Dakota, where they did the required preliminary blood testing, purchased their marriage certificate, and Adell's mother gave permission for her and Harvey to be married. They then traveled to Custer, South Dakota and were married on January 3, 1955.Harvey and Adell returned to Nebraska for a short time, where they started their family. They then moved to Newcastle, Wyoming, where Harvey worked as a ranch hand, equipment operator, and truck driver, Adell was a housewife/mother, and worked for the elementary school. While in Newcastle, they finished having their children, raised them to adulthood, and started their grandparent years. In 1988, they moved to Walla Walla, Washington where Harvey retired. He then returned to Great Falls, Montana around 2006, and remained there until his passing.Harvey enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing, and spending time with his family. He taught his children and grandchildren, many of his skills, and hobbies, creating memorable experiences, and family traditions around the many hunting and fishing trips. He included his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in his lessons on how to garden, raise and hunt for your own food, how to fix and maintain ones own bicycles, motorcycles, and vehicles. Their yearly hunting trips to the Big Horn Mountains, and their favorite fishing holes became, and continue to be, a big part of the family traditions. Harvey is survived by his wife, Grace Adell Cardwell of Great Falls, MT; daughters Debbie Hammond and Cindy Nicholson; sons Harvey Cardwell, Jim Cardwell, and Garry Cardwell; twelve grandchildren Joshua Nicholson, Jennifer Hammond-Perryman, Shauna Nicholson-Sack, Tonya Cardwell-Michael, Violet Hammond-Beauvais, Shiela Cardwell, Jacob Cardwell, Alisha Cardwell-Scholz, Cody Cardwell, Kelsy Cardwell, Matthew Cardwell, Morgan Cardwell; and twenty-two great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Violet Cardwell; and sisters Joann Downing and Rose Cardwell. Harvey passed away in his home on April 26, 2017, in Great Falls, Montana. Visistation will take place on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Schnider Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Hillcrest Lawn Memorial Chapel
