Harriet O. (Schultz) Anderson, 90, of Great Falls, Director of Nursing for MSU at the Deaconess Hospital, died of natural causes on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at a local nursing home.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at Faith Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m.Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.Schnider Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Harriet was born on May 16, 1921 to John and Helen Schultz in Hinsdale, Montana and was raised there.In 1939, Harriet graduated from Hinsdale High School.She attended and graduated from Consolidated Deaconess School of Nursing in Great Falls in 1942, and the University of Montana in 1957, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree in Bozeman, Montana.In 1961, she received her Masters Degree in Nursing form the University of Montana. She then specialized in pediatric nursing.She was a staff nurse, then supervisor of the Pediatrics Department and an instructor and director of Nursing for MSU for the Great Falls Campus for 35 years. During WWII she was a staff nurse at hospitals in Oakdale, LA and Skagway, AK.Harriet gave the first penicillin injection ever given in Great Falls.In 1970, Harriet was the only delegate from Great Falls selected to be one of Montanas Representatives to the White House Conference on children and youth.She served on a Western States Committee on improved distribution of nursing personnel from 1975-1976.In 1977 Harriet was named Nurse of the Year for the state of Montana.Then in 1983 she was given the honorable title of Professor Emeritus.In 1986, after all of her many accomplishments, Harriet retired and she joined the Retired Teachers Association.She was a volunteer for the RSVP, Deaconess Hospital (now Benefis) and Red Cross.In 2006, Harriet received the Presidents Volunteer Service Award from the Presidents Council on Service and Civic Participation.Harriet was a charter member of Zeta Upsilon, Sigma Theta Tau and National Honor Society of Nursing and was also an active member of the Great Falls Flower Growers, where she held many offices over the years and served on many committees.She enjoyed volunteering and caring for friends, family and neighbors.She also enjoyed flowers and gardening; traveling with her sisters to foreign countries and taking tours around the West, Canada and Alaska.Harriet is survived by daughters Cheryl (Joe) Slater and Marilyn Woods, both of Great Falls; sister, Jeannette Squires of Richland, WA; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Anderson; parents John and Helen Schultz; brothers Raymond and Albert Schultz; a sister Betty (Schultz) Cox; granddaughters Stacy Slater and great-granddaughter Jazmyne Ziegler.Memorials are suggested to MSU School of Nursing, P.O.
