Guy Douglas Schmidt

May 19, 1947 — November 6, 2019

Guy Douglas Schmidt, 72, passed away peacefully in hospice on Wednesday, November 6, 2019. A life-long resident of Great Falls, Guy graduated from Great Falls High in 1965. He attended the University of Montana for a short time before entering the Army, and serving in Vietnam as a combat engineer. After leaving the military, he returned to college and earned a teaching degree. He was a student teacher for the shop classes at Geraldine and quickly decided teaching wasn't for him. He went back to college and received a degree in Civil Engineering from Montana State University and worked as a Civil Engineer/Forest Transportation Planner for the Lewis and Clark National Forest. Guy was known for his determination and perseverance, even at a young age. When 15, he participated in a Kennedy March with friends from Bethel Lutheran Church Luther League, walking 50 miles, from Great Falls to Cascade and back, in one day. It took him over 14 hours and by the end he could barely walk, because his feet were so blistered, but he completed the entire walk. Later in life, Guy enjoyed traveling with his wife, cooking, a good political discussion, and he never met an animal he didn't like. Guy was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife of 39 years, Rita Ann (Westermark) Schmidt; parents, Gordon Fenwick Schmidt and Gladys Gene (Shong) Schmidt; and his half-sister Coralee Ann (Schmidt) Olson. He is survived by his sister, Gina Lynne Schmidt, and his half-sister, Merilee Kae (Schmidt) LaFond. No services will be held at this time. According to their wishes, Guy's ashes, along with those of his wife, will be scattered together sometime next spring. Memorial donations may be made to the animal rescue organization of your choice.
