The town of Power lost one of its strongest ambassadors on April 1, 2022, when Dale E. Bauman passed away at his home from myelodysplastic syndrome at the age of 92.He was born on November 17, 1929, to Joseph and Olive Bauman.Dale was always proud to say he was the “oldest resident who had lived in Power his entire life” moving a total of 300 yards throughout his 92 years.
Dale graduated from Power High School in 1947 and attended Northern Montana College in Havre for a short time.He married Gwendolyn “Joyce” Oleson in Sun River, Montana, on February 1, 1948.The Bauman family homesteaded east of Power beginning in 1910 and Dad farmed the home place along with acquired acreage from 1949 until his retirement in 1992.
To supplement his farming operation, Dad had many jobs including a school bus driver and civil worker for the Air Force plowing snow and providing security for Boeing. He had a water delivery business that helped motivate him to be instrumental in getting a water system for the town of Power in the 1960s.
Dale served the local fire department for 38 years, was a two-term school board trustee, and was an 18-year member of the Power Farmers’ Elevator Company board. He enjoyed coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. As one of the originators forming the Power Senior Center, Dale helped with the moving and remodeling of the former railroad depot which is the current building of this organization. He held various offices for the Senior Center as well as the United Church of Christ.
Dale was an outstanding athlete at Power High School participating in football, basketball, and track. After high school, he was part of independent town basketball and baseball teams. In later years, his energy was transferred to cheering on the Pirates while logging endless hours in the stands. No one will be a more ardent Power Pirate fan than Dale Bauman! No matter the players, no matter the age, no matter the weather conditions he supported “his” team. He was very involved and proud of the Sports Complex which was built by local volunteers for the football, track, and baseball teams. There were not many functions and causes Dale did not support when it came to the local schools. The Power school system lost a diamond with Dale’s passing. He bled “Purple!”
Three accolades that touched Dale deeply were being Grand Marshall along with his wife, Joyce, for Harvest Fest, being honored as the Class “C” Northern Fan of the Year in 2007, and being chosen for the Montana Farmers Union “100 Years of Operation Award” for the family farm in 2010.
